چکیده

The Venus Express Radio Science Experiment (VeRa) was part of the scientific payload (VEX) spacecraft and targeted at investigation Venus’ atmosphere, surface, gravity field as well interplanetary medium. This paper describes methods required calibrations applied to VEX-VeRa raw radio occultation data used retrieve vertical profiles ionosphere neutral atmosphere. In this work we perform an independent analysis a set 25 VEX, single-frequency (X-band), occultations carried out in 2014, recorded open-loop NASA Deep Space Network. Our temperature, pressure electron density are agreement with previous studies available literature. Furthermore, our shows that is more influenced by day/night condition than latitude variations, while atmosphere experiences opposite. interpretation these results based on two major responsible effects: high thermal inertia zonal winds. Their presence within determine why regions dependence predominant condition. On contrary, higher altitudes aforementioned effects less important or null, peaks probed day-time occultations, regardless latitude.

Backpropagation Processing of GPS Radio Occultation Data

We provide an assessment of the backpropagation (BP) method for processing GPS radio occultations using simulations as well as recent data from CHAMP and SAC-C. It is found that BP gives improved retrievals over the standard Doppler technique, even when multipath ambiguities are not completely removed. In addition, by being an amplitude-weighted algorithm, BP is robust in the presence of receiv...

Assimilation of GPS Radio Occultation Data for Numerical Weather Prediction

With the availability of approximately 4,000 radio occultation soundings per day within three hours of observation, COSMIC has the potential to contribute significantly to global and regional weather analysis and prediction. However, the basic radio occultation measurements (phase delays) are very different from traditional meteorological measurements (i.e., temperature, water vapor), and to ef...

Radio-holographic analysis of Microlab-1 radio occultation data in the lower troposphere

[1] The interpretation of radio occultation data in the lower troposphere is a complicated problem due to strong multipath effects. This problem can be solved on the basis of the wave optics. We analyze Microlab-1 radio occultation using two radio-holographic approaches: the radio-optics method, which employs the analysis of the local spatial spectra of the registered wave field, and the canoni...

Potential Impact of COSMIC GPS Radio Occultation Data on Regional

A major challenge for operational numerical weather prediction over the Antarctic and Southern Ocean is the lack of traditional meteorological observations. This increases uncertainty in the model initial condition and results in inferior forecast skills as compared with numerical weather prediction in mid-latitudes over the Northern Hemisphere. With the lack of traditional observations over th...

Coronae and Large Volcanoes on Venus with Unusual Emissivity Signatures in Virtis- Venus Express Data

Recent Visual and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) images from the Ve-nus Express mission found emissivity variations on the venusian surface that correlate with some volcanic edifices and coronae [1-3]. Increased emissivity was noted near Quet-zalpetlatl Coronae, Atete Corona, Mertseger Mons, Shiwanokia and Shulamite Coronae in Themis Regio, Idunn Mons, Hathor Mons and Ininni Mon...
